This story represents the neighborhood associations of Otrobanda. As neighborhood associations, we aim to preserve the authentic charm and livability of Otrobanda amidst increasing developments and investments. While the refurbishment of buildings by investors contributes to improving the appearance and living environment, it is crucial for Otrobanda to maintain its character as a diverse and inclusive neighborhood. Moreover, amid the future climate challenges investors and government stakeholders should assist civic organizations in preserving their livelihood in the present as well as in the future. It is necessary for the government to implement policies that support both economic development and protect the interests of the local community, with a focus on preserving  local life and the unique heritage and identity of Otrobanda.
Especially Breedestraat Otrobanda is in need of much attention. Located in the heart of Otrobanda, as the main street for retail and SME's it currently has many vacant buildings and is desperate need of revitalization. The biggest challenges facing Breedestraat include maintaining the (immaterial) cultural and (material) architectural heritage of the street while balancing modern development, managing increased traffic and parking issues, addressing concerns about public safety, deminishing odor pollution and other hygiene issues, resolving the absence of local businesses, managing waste disposal , and ensuring sustainable development. Additionally, there is a need for effective community engagement and collaboration to address these challenges and foster positive growth with the people from surrounding neighborhoods.
At the same time the neighborhood has developed a festive neighborhood thermometer. Once a year, just before the fall, the vibrant streets of Otrobanda come alive with the rhythms of the Kaya Kaya Festival, a celebration that goes beyond mere social issues. It's a testament to the resilience and spirit of community in the neighborhood. But amidst the festivities, there is also a sense of purpose, a need to catalyze positive change in the neighborhood. Throughout the event, artists, local businesses and neighborhood organizations host workshops and discussions on topics ranging from sustainable development to community empowerment, inspiring residents to take an active role in shaping the future of Otrobanda.
With activities that dynamically balance economic growth and sustainable development neighborhood organizations hope to preserve local interests and heritage. With Kolektivo by their side, the residents of Otrobanda know that together, they can create a brighter future for their neighborhood and beyond. Through funding, guidance, and support, Kolektivo provides the resources needed to supercharge the efforts of those dedicated to positive change on the island. Whether it's protecting the environment, organizing impactful projects, or building tools for communities worldwide, Kolektivo is there every step of the way. We as neighborhood organizations would like expand our neighborhood engagement activities to develop Breedestraat Otrobanda, but need healthy and long term investors to move forward.
