In the Energy Challenge, local residents track their energy use daily by reading the electricity, gas and water meters. They send in these values or keep a list themselves. In this way, local residents spend two minutes every day dealing with energy and also learn how a (smart) meter works. In this way, each resident's energy transition starts with their own actions, insight, control and results in a sense of pride.

Gaining insight together
In neighborhood meetings, the results are discussed with the entire group using clear visualizations per participant. Together with the group we discuss why the electricity, gas and water consumption is as high or low as it is. Tips and experiences are exchanged among themselves, which are received as very reliable. The Green Hub holds the role of facilitator and moderator of the meeting and the results. The Green Hub supports there where the knowledge of local residents stops. It is mainly the residents who help each other.Â
Insight and then what?Â
After participation in the Energy Challenge for about a month, participants have gained insight in their energy use. The results immediately show the opportunities for energy saving and energy cost reduction measures. The new insight and knowledge motivates the participants to start applying these measures, suitable for their house and themselves. Measures that require more than a simple purchase at the hardware store are offered by the Green Hub as a service. Examples are QuickFix measures and making insulating curtains. After the energy-saving measures have been implemented, the energy challenge is used to quantify the effectiveness of the measures.
