Capturing personal stories and becoming a professional filmmaker

From the collaboration between the DIA (Documentary Institute Amsterdam) and the Green Hub, an educational media project has emerged in which capturing personal stories is used to show micro-society in Southeast and social change. The program is called DIAZO.

Participants learn to transform their personal stories into images and sound. From theoretical film history to making it themselves. Writing, directing, camera, sound and editing.

Led by professionals, skills are worked on, increasing knowledge and understanding of media, framing and propaganda. Skills that can contribute in a social and economic sense to a strengthening of the social foundation, an own social-financial position. Participants are trained as junior audiovisual assistants and beginning filmmakers.

DIA is a specialist in the field of (social) media and provides educational programs for (young) adults from Holendrechtplein 44 in a former school next to the metro station. In innovative educational modules, the institute makes a connection between theory and practice.

Learning in practical and theoretical terms about your own gaze and that of others. Learning to look and really hear.Participants are given a voice. They matter and participate. Maybe first as a novice professional, but at least as a critical and knowledgeable stakeholder.

The media programs are a 5 monthly educational program for up to eighteen young adult participants from the immediate area of Holendrechtplein and surroundings.

The classes are taught by AV professionals in Dutch and English in the evenings. After satisfactory practical and theoretical completion, participants become junior AV specialists and receive a certificate from the DIA. For some a self-reliant stepping stone to (semi-) professional creator.

There is a maximum of 15 participants per program. On average, 11 participants complete the practical course, of which three candidates eventually complete the theoretical course as well. In the program, candidates are encouraged from the start to make a 'video selfie'. A free and personal documentary or fiction assignment in which their own idea is transformed into image and sound.

First focus the camera on yourself before taking a look at the outside world. Getting to know the camera and sound as a weapon for your own (small) intimate story.
