Urban ArenA Mix

Supports the benchmark "Masterplan Amsterdam Zuid Oost":

Driven by the mandate as invested in the 'Innovation deal'(1) with the City of Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Economic Board, The Johan Cruijff ArenA, together with its innovation partners, will work to lead and enable co-creation, co-development, experimentation and testing, and thus structurally contribute to the realisation of ArenAPoort development.

Driven by the mandate as invested in the 'Innovation deal'(1) with the City of Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Economic Board, The Johan Cruijff ArenA, together with its innovation partners, will work to lead and enable co-creation, co-development, experimentation and testing, and thus structurally contribute to the realization of Arenapoort development. In doing so, we are actively translating our commitment as laid down in the 'Innovation Deal' signed on March 14th 2014, into a concrete contribution to metropolitan development in the Metropolitan Amsterdam by putting its money where its mouth is. We are willing to co-invest in the key projects to develop a flexible ('agile') sustainable liveable South-East 'by design' and demonstrably, through measurable outcomes, can be of value to the other districts as a source of knowledge and experience. It requires a mandate and resources, but also direct involvement and willingness to co-invest from all stakeholders in the area. The ArenApoort Manifesto - Liveable and Sustainable City 'by Design' encompasses the main lines of our commitment and contribution, which we would like to contribute.

After years of relative peace, a lot has happened in the ArenAPoort area in the last year. The projects and initiatives for construction/transformation/realisation of homes, offices, hotels, leisure or a combination thereof keep coming. The enthusiasm is contagious and creates energy, momentum and dynamism. And that's a good thing: Amsterdam is ambitious. The brand-new coalition agreement states that 7,500 homes and associated facilities, public spaces, workspaces and a well-designed public space must be added per year. Southeast, with De ArenAPoort as the modern center, is one of the most important areas in the city for this development. A modern center of Amsterdam. From an area where people work alone and attend major events to a highly urban and 'hospitable' residential area with a unique mix of living, leisure activities, shopping, working and meeting. With a pleasant living environment at any time of the day; an area for everyone. The aim is to build on this existing strength, and to ensure densification and connection within the area. Today, a number of stakeholders endorsed the above ambition to achieve the above ambition. This ambition document is the blueprint for the area, in which all projects will have a place. The municipality ensures cohesion within the area to ensure quality. Cohesion between buildings, in the public space and between ArenAPoort East and West. The connection between residents, visitors and people who work in Zuidoost is central to this. The 'Life Line' plays a major role in this. A strip of 1.5 km, between the Arena and the Anton de Komplein, which runs through the area like a vein, provides connection and liveliness. Part of this is also the railway. Obviously important for the accessibility of ArenAPoort, but is also often seen as a barrier. This should be a strong backbone, with two active sides that complement each with other positive influence.

ArenAPoort develops into the new beating heart of Zuidoost!

In order to be able to properly facilitate the growth in the number of residents, jobs and visitors in ArenAPoort - now and in the future - a number of targeted investments in public space and infrastructure are necessary. There is also a major greening challenge. Because (supra) regional infrastructure and resident-oriented facilities are already largely in place, these investments are relatively limited when compared to the enormous room for development. The municipality opts for an adaptive approach in which the area develops step by step and in which it monitors every development. The municipality wants to be a leader in the Netherlands, Europe and perhaps even the world. This provides the municipality with important information to properly substantiate the next development step and to make targeted investments in the public space.

Together with the municipality of Amsterdam the Johan Cruijff ArenA has the ambition to contribute to the development of our neighborhood Arenapoort: ‘By 2030 Arenapoort is an attractive, urban and welcoming place to be, a beating heart in the Southeast of Amsterdam. A metropolitan center in Amsterdam with a unique mix of living, meeting, working and leisure activities. An international hotspot for entertainment with and international vibe and liveable ecosystem during the day. A green urban area which invites you to visit and stay, with a focus on sports and health. Arenapoort is the Dutch inspiring liveable city with ‘solutions by design’ in the field of sustainability, inclusiveness, safety and security and prosperity for its resident, entrepreneurs and visitors.
